Gumbaynggirr
The Gumbaynggirr people have lived on these lands for thousands years and the descendents can still be found living in and around the mid-north coast

The Gumbaynggirr lands cover an area of the Mid North Coast from the Nambucca in the south to the Mid-Clarence in the north and to Armidale in the west making the Gumbaynggirr tribe one of the largest in NSW.

The Muurrbay Aboriginal Language and Culture Co-operative still teach the original language of the land of which their are several different dialects. With the help of Ken Walker, Bro Steve Morrelli, Sharon Smith and of course the Gumbaynggirr elders who past it on so it could be taught to future generations of the Gumbaynggirr tribe, they have translated and archived tapes of the elders speaking the language back in the 50's and 60's and created a gumbaynggirr curriculum to be taught to the kids and the adult descendants of the Gumbaynggirr people. Their is also a Gumbaynggirr dictionary that they have produced and is now on sale from the Muurrbay Language Centre

The Muurrbay Aboriginal language and culture co-operative is located in the old church on Bellwood Rd in Nambucca Heads or ring (02) 6569 4294 and ask for Ken Walker.
