DEEP CREEK
REACH PROJECT
The Deep Creek Project has kicked off! The aim
of the project is to improve quality & quantity of riparian
vegetation & protect the existing stream in Deep Creek. Deep
Creek has been blessed with a lot of rock & thus the creek has
maintained structural integrity that has been lost in many other
creeks in the Nambucca catchment with resultant bed lowering.
Due to it's relatively small size, an opportunity exists in the
Deep Creek catchment for landholders to control all the riparian
weeds at once. We intend to have a field day on camphor laurel
control at which all NVL members will be welcome.
TAYLOR'S ARM REACH PROJECT
A
similar project is coming to a close in Taylor's Arm. The T.A
project was more focused on bed & bank stability. There will be
a weed control & vegetation enhancement phase beginning shortly.
A group of Nambucca residents has formed a group to look after
the coast from the V-Wall to Little Beach. The informal group
will have gatherings & working bee's.
NVL is looking to employ a qualified person to do a management
Plan for the area from the V-Wall to Little Beach. The plan must
outline a clear work plan that the volunteers can work to.
NAMBUCCA OYSTERS
NVL & John Schmidt from the Dept. of Natural Resources are
working with the Oyster Industry in the Nambucca to
improve water quality in the estuary after rain events.
The Oyster Industry is an iconic industry in that it requires
clean water to exist. If oyster harvests in an estuary are
ordered closed it is indicative that the water quality is below
standard & that land use in the catchment & urban management
need to be examined. We are looking at developing a management
plan not only to assist the oyster growers but also help others
understand the importance of water quality to the whole
community.
Presently NSW Food Authority has
ordered that the Nambucca Estuary is closed to oyster harvest if
25mm of rain falls in a single event. This means that the
industry may be closed for a large portion of the year.
