Nambucca Valley Phoenix Limited (phoenix)
became incorporated in 1995 as a non-profit charity
organisation. Funding is provided by the Commonwealth Department
of Family and Community Services.
The Nambucca Rotary Club and the Bowraville
Lions Club are supporting the recent renovations of our Heritage
Building, they provide many voluntary hours to paint the outside
of the building and are returning some of the inside areas,
mainly the staircase, to its former beauty. The building still
retains some of its unique features such as the large walk in
Bank Safe that has the inside of the door inscribed with the
names of the last employees at the Bank, while open fire places
keep the Bank cosy and warm on cool winter days.
Tourists enjoy the
'Old World Charm' and 'Pleasant airy Café
verandas'.
The service has grown and now provides
employment for people with intellectual disabilities in three
supported business sectors, the community work crew, arts, and
in their own café . This type of work is termed 'Supported
Employment' and provides support for people to assist them in
their job as well as training. All phoenix workers are paid
wages equal to productivity from the profit of the businesses.
